LAB

A space to share passion projects and design experiments. Inspired by print magazines, “LAB” is shaped around the seasons to create a time capsule of personal, creative work.

01 Photo Journal —

Portugal, December 2019

I’ve wanted to try my hand at solo traveling for many years. Fortunately, I got a chance to do so twice in 2019 — semi-solo through Japan in July and Portugal in December. Admittedly, December probably wasn’t the best time to visit a country that really comes to life during warmer months but there are unexpected pleasures in visiting a place during off-season.

01 Digital Light Study —

A study in how light is perceived

Depending on the project, a lot of my day-to-day can be spent thinking about designs and systems that are quite complex. It’s easy to fall into a logic driven head-space and justification-based design. This study was born from a desire to take a break from tech heavy, industry changing ideas and instead focus on something simple: a light. In today’s results-driven world, we are given little space to aimlessly explore and discover through experimentation. I’ve always been fascinated with transparency and translucency and I wanted to explore those things in the context of a light. How might form and material change how light is perceived?

How might this light turn on if this was a wall-mounted fixture?

04 Chef’s Knife Design —

Design & Build - WIP

An architect and furniture designer that I used to work for once told me that every industrial designer should design and build their own knife at some point in their career. He spoke at length about the poetry of shaping pure materials and about how the knife is one of the oldest human hand tools.

Recently, as a passion project, my team bought steel blanks to design and make our own knives by hand. I chose to go with a classic, versatile chef’s knife. More progress to come.

01 Project_XX —

2-D form studies through the lens of a single, focused constraint.

Born from a desire to have a creative exercise that could be done even after an exhausting day in the studio, this project captures how following or breaking a simple rule can unlock fresh, unexpected ideas.
